The series, Another World, Another View, reflects Jordan Porter-Woodruff's time in South Africa while participating in a residency with the Muholi Art Institute under the leadership of Zanele Muholi.
Created over the course of three weeks, the series traces Porter-Woodruff’s experiences across Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Western Cape.
Shortly into her stay, her attention was drawn to the vastly different ways of life and identities amongst natives.
While in the Western Cape, she traveled with her guide, Lydia, who introduced her to family and friends. These encounters allowed Porter-Woodruff to experience South Africa through personal relationships rather than observation alone.
This distinction, while immersed in a country physically divided by neighborhood conditions and remnants of apartheid, also exposed the relentless pride and community South Africans live by.
Further, learning that the country recognizes 12 official languages, with many people speaking several. The various ways of interaction and ways of being came into focus.
That realization became the visual language of “Another World, Another View.” Through layered photographs, overlapping figures, landscapes and moments, Porter-Woodruff allows multiple realities to coexist within a single frame.
Ultimately, the series considers the limitations of a singular perspective and asks what becomes visible when multiple moments and viewpoints are allowed to occupy the same image.
